this is my grandpa hunter (my kids call him papi) throwing grandma over his lap to give her a kiss. she would then turn bright red with embarrassment, every time! he loved to do things like that to her in front of us grand kids. i remember him reaching out and giving her little tush a pinch and she would jump through the roof with a squeal. oh, how i love to watch him tease her. there are so many things i remember about the two of them from their healthier days. i wish my kids could have known the same grandma and papi that i knew as a child. some of my favorite memories of my childhood are of them.
when i was in elementary school i would always wait until i got to school to be 'sick'. when the secretary would dial my home number i would let it ring once, hang up, and tell her that nobody was answering. my grandma and grandpa were #2 on the calling list. one of them would come get me. if it was grandpa we would always stop by the old farm and check on the cattle or change the irrigation water. he would pick an apple off of one of mitchell's trees, pull out his pocket knife, cut and skin it for me. if it was grandma we would go straight to her house, she would butter (with real butter- no margarine here!) homemade bread and put freezer jam on it (which always seemed to give me a miraculous recovery). then she would pull out all her sewing scraps, give me a needle and thread and i was free to make what ever i pleased for the rest of the day- i guess this is where my love for quilting and sewing all began. i loved days with my grandparents! when i didn't come home from school when expected, my mom would track me down and ask why i didn't call her- she was home all day long and only heard the phone ring once- but who ever it was had hung up (hallelujah for no caller id or cell phones at the time!). i'm sure she knew that i was playing hooky, but how can you get mad a little girl who just wanted some alone time with her grandparents?
i love you grandma ruth and papi!!!!
