guilty?

my sweet husband has volunteered to help coach his friend's kid's baseball team. he is in his highth of glory, but it makes for a long saturday when one game is at 11am and the next is at 5pm. by the time he got home this last saturday night i was ready to pull my hair out. not that the kids were being bad... they just weren't being perfect and i had had a long week. we planned to go meet jeff at the 5pm game, but kamryn and hunter both took way to long to get ready and i am not going to beg them at this stage in the day. i called jeff and let him know we would not be making it. i laid on the couch and closed my eyes to try to keep some sanity... and then i hear, no, felt a knocking... on my forehead. hunter: "mom, you wake?", me: "NO!", hunter: "wake up!", me: "NO!", hunter: "YES!", me: "WHY?", hunter: "'snot naptime!" and so the conversation with my 2 year old continues. by the time jeff came through the door the kids had dinner shoved down their throats and were in the tub (i was looking forward to an early bedtime!). he didn't even get both feet in the door before i had my purse and keys in hand and was walking out. jeff: "where you going?", me: "anywhere but here!" i stopped and picked up my cousin lacy (caretaker of grandma and i was sure she could use an escape as much as me) and we went for coldstone ice cream (my pickens- chocolate icecream with brownies, caramel and hot fudge). we just sat in my car and chitchatted about everything and nothing and before i knew it 2 hours had passed. this is about the time jeff is suppose to call sick with worry, but then i realized i had forgotten my phone- oops! so i dropped lacy off and back home i headed. when i walked through the door all was quite. the kitchen was clean and this little paper was folded up with my name on it.

this is jeff's hand writing, he was kamryn's scribe. he informed me that she felt awful about making crazy me and since it was too late to buy flowers at the store she drew me a bouquet at the bottom. man, she is good at guilt trips (i guess you can't beat out of them what is bred into them)! needless to say, i felt like a lousy mom for running out, but better that than the alternative!

That is so funny! I have done the same thing several times...just walked right out as soon as there was another adult in the house! :) It is so hard during long weeks like that...

How fun to go for icecream...sounds like you and me would get along just fine! :) Now, why can't a big bowl of artichokes drown our sorrows and make everything better?!?! DARN IT!

You should only feel guilt when you have done something wrong. In this case no guilt is necessary!!!!
